Changes to Land Tax in Queensland - 2023

Do you hold land in QLD and other states? Be ready for a shock in 2023. QLD is the first state to assess land tax based on AUSTRALIA-WIDE land rather than exclusively QLD land. That means suddenly you could be assessed on land which was not usually included in the land tax calculations.

If all the land you own is in QLD you are likely to be unaffected by this change. However - if you own any land interstate then there is a good chance this will tip you over the limit or increase your already existing land tax. This will apply even if you’re not a QLD resident and you simply own land in QLD.


The exemption for your principal place of residence still exists. We expect this change may trigger some landowners to re-think their holdings by either selling real estate assets. Another option may include moving to a different property so that their main residence is the exempt property from land tax…
